Viktor “Isildur1” Blom likely spent the last day believing he was poised to gain revenge against Isaac Haxton, the only person who had so far emerged victorious against the Swedish pro in PokerStars’ SuperStar Showdown series. But a furious rally by Haxton turned the tide on Tuesday, giving him another victory over Blom. The match between Blom and Haxton was originally scheduled to take place on Sunday, and that is when the action started. However, after just under 700 hands had been played, Haxton’s failing internet connection – damaged by severe storms that had recently hit Malta – meant that the match would ultimately have to be decided on Tuesday. The players came back to PokerStars to play the last 1,800 hands of their $100/$200 no-limit hold’em match, but they did not resume the match on even terms. The short session on Sunday had left Blom with a lead of nearly $100,000.Early on in Tuesday’s action, Blom extended his lead even further. At the 1,000 hand mark, Blom’s advantage swelled to over $125,000, and it began to seem inevitable that he would get the win he had waited over a year for. Haxton would manage to win some big pots, but Blom was still up by more than $100,000 after the halfway point in the match. That was when Haxton began to fight back. After 15,000 hands, he had whittled Blom’s lead to under $50,000; by hand 18,000, he had retaken the lead and was more than $40,000 ahead of Blom.Just when all hope seemed lost for Isildur1, a $95,000 pot got him back into the match, and with less than 100 hands remaining, Blom trailed by less than $400. That would be as close as Blom would get. He was able to win one more big pot, but it wasn’t enough to get him a lead. At the end of the match, Haxton had won again, this time by the thin margin of $5,093.With the win, Blom has now lost twice to Haxton – a fact that is especially notable because Blom has managed to defeat all of the nine other opponents he has faced in the SuperStar Showdown. Blom’s next challenger England’s Alexander Millar; that match will take place this coming Sunday.
