Summary
- All online poker operators in Pennsylvania recovered from record-low revenue in June
- PokerStars remains the number one online poker room but its market share declined
- Rival operators are continuing to show huge improvements, with increases in revenue and market share
Pennsylvania’s online poker market appears to have recovered from its poor showing back in June based on the latest figures released by the state’s gaming regulator.
According to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), online poker operators currently active in the state generated $2.8 million in revenue in July, up 6.3% from June’s figures. The latest results also represent an increase of 6.5% compared to revenue recorded in July 2021.
PokerStars PA Revenue Recovers but Market Share Shrinks
In particular, PokerStars managed to bounce back from its worst month so far since launching in the Keystone State. Last month, the site recorded $1.64 million in gross earnings, a 1.1% increase from June during which its revenue hit a record low of 1.61 million. Still, the operator is dealing with a year-over-year drop of 17.3%.
The revenue decline doesn’t come as a surprise given that WSOP PA went live in the state in July 2021, which meant PokerStars PA needed to stave off competition from three sites over the past 12 months, including Borgata Poker PA and BetMGM Poker PA, both of which launched in April 2021, ending PokerStars PA’s online poker monopoly.
The latest data also show that while PokerStars’ recovered slightly in July, its market share had shrunk to 59.2% from 62.3% in June.
WSOP PA, BetMGM/Borgata Continue to Grow
Meanwhile, WSOP PA which has only been operating for just over a year recorded a 7.5% increase in revenue in July to $744,000 from $692,000 the month prior. That figure is more than thrice the revenue generated by the operator in July 2021 which stood at just $242,000, though the latest figures can’t provide an accurate year-over-year comparison since WSOP PA launched in the middle of July 2021.
BetMGM Poker PA recorded a month-to-month increase of 21.5% when it generated $275,000 in July, up from $227,000 in June. Its market share last month also went up to 10% compared to 8.7% in June. But year-over-year, revenue was down 5.2%.
Borgata Poker currently sits in fourth place in terms of revenue and market share. Its earnings for July reached a record $108,000, an increase of 73.1% from last month and also up 27.9% year over year. Borgata accounted for 3.9% of the PA online poker market in July, also a record performance from the operator.
Based on July’s figures, both BetMGM and Borgata, which are part of the BetMGM US Network, have grown in popularity in the Keystone State. Their combined revenue so far this year sits at $2.4 million, with a market share of 11.8% in July, up from 11.5% in June.
