A total of 396 people came to the World Poker Tour Vienna for a chance to take down the €3,500 Main Event championship, including many of the world’s top tournament players. But in the end, it was the relatively unknown Morten Christensen who was able to outlast them all and win $410,519 for first place.Christensen had a very limited live tournament resume before having won WPT Vienna. So far in 2012, he had secured three small cashes, but that was all he had accomplished in his live tournament career. In fact, Christensen didn’t even directly buy into the tournament; he won a seat in the prestigious event after qualifying through a €300 online satellite. Christensen does play professionally, but is mostly an online poker player. The final table wasn’t heavy on star power, but there were a few players who had previous success in large events before. Perhaps the most accomplished was Canadian Ben Wilinofsky, who had just won an EPT title in Berlin last year. Wilinofsky would ultimately finish in 3rd place, taking home $161,003.The tournament came down to a heads-up confrontation between Christensen and Konstantin Tolokno in which the two had approximately equal chip stacks going in. Christensen, who had been amongst the chip leaders for much of the tournament, secured a small chip lead before the final hand was dealt. Tolokno made a three-bet all-in with K8 of spades, which was called by Christensen, who held A8 of hearts. An ace on the flop only increased Christensen’s lead, and when Tolokno did not improve, Christensen had won his first major title. Tolokno received $251,166 for second place. The win was just the latest in a long line of Danish poker victories in major European poker events over the past few months. Before Christensen’s triumph on the WPT, three different Danish players had already won European Poker Tour events this year.
